Vegetable
Oil - Is this Bio - Diesel?
NO Bio-Diesel is a fuel which is still misunderstood
and often confused with other Bio-Fuels like for instance
Ethanol. The confusion stems from the fact that the base
material for both fuels could be vegetable oil. Bio-Diesel has
to be manufactured and produced.
What is Bio-Diesel?
It is a Methyl-Ester obtained through a trans-esterefication with a
light Alcohol and fatty substances. It can be utilized as 100%
(B100) but the most popular blends being concentrations of 2% (B2), 5% (B5) and
20% (B20) with regular Diesel. Bio-Diesel can be run in any
existing diesel engine without modification.
Advantages and Benefits of Bio-Diesel:
-
It is a completely renewable fuel made from virgin or waste
vegetable oil that can be run in existing diesel engines as
described above.
-
Bio-Diesel is non-toxic. It is less toxic than sugar and
more readily bio-degradable than table salt.
-
It reduces the emission of harmful pollutants (mainly
particulates) from diesel engines. Compared to petroleum
diesel, pure bio-diesel (B100) produces a 73% reduction in
lifecycle CO2 emissions, a 67% reduction in unburned hydrocarbons,
a 48% reduction in sulphur oxide emissions and an 80% reduction in
polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, which can cause cancer and
emphysema.
-
Increases the lubricity in diesel engines, thus enhancing
engine life, performance and safety. Bio-Diesel could be the
ideal additive to petro-diesel for maintaining the fuels
lubricity, especially with the new ultra low sulfur fuels.
-
Blends easily in any concentration with petro-diesel and
enables total user flexibility - it can be splash-blended with
petro-diesel creating a bio-diesel blend one day, petro-diesel
alone the next day and then back to a blend or (B100), tc.
